In 2004, I looked closely at the documentation in my sketchbook and began thinking about the classical concept of “genus loci,” which means the spirit of a place that gives it its’ sense of character. With this concept in mind, I sought to depict my version of Bent Mountain. Along with my own memories and experiences, the Genus Loci series reflects the regional history, and how human interaction has impacted the mountain and the animals with which we share the landscape. One aspect of the landscape that has always intrigued me is the series of high-voltage towers that cross Bent Mountain. These towers seem to stride across the mountain with unnatural geometric precision. They have a sinister figurative appearance. Using the geometric construction of the high voltage towers that cut across the mountain, my sculptures depict a hybrid creature that reflects an evolution of our spirituality and deities. This hybrid creative show mankind’s approach to manipulating nature and questions whether it is scientific or unconscious. These towers map my own personal narrative and geometry of a childlike belief in monsters and magic found in nature that marks the crossroads of science and myth.
