I created this collection of sculptures in the years that followed my graduation from the Kansas City Art Institute and the return to my cabin on Bent Mountain. I was trying to reconcile a new way of viewing and making contemporary art with the rural lifestyle in Southern Appalachia. This location has had a profound impact on my identity and these sculptures are my attempt of reflecting that impact on my artwork. Using my own history with woodworking, along with the heritage of crafts in the southern Appalachians, I used the rustic quality with a consciously rough and raw appearance to question the contemporary view of craft.
